Who we are.

What we do.

Specialising in the data-driven selection of elite Thoroughbreds.

Patrick Duncan is the founder of Bio-Cal Thoroughbreds, a data-driven bloodstock advisory focused on the identification and selection of elite racehorses.

Born and raised in South Africa and now based in Sydney, Australia, Patrick brings an international perspective alongside a technical understanding of the Thoroughbred as an athlete. He is a graduate of Hartpury University (UK), holding a BSc (Hons) in Racehorse Performance & Rehabilitation, and combines academic grounding with practical industry experience and a structured, analytical approach to horse selection.

His early career included time working under respected Cape Town trainers Eric Sands and Joey Ramsden, providing hands-on exposure to racehorse management and performance. He later gained breeding and sales experience as a stud hand at Tweenhills Stud in the United Kingdom, one of Europe’s leading commercial thoroughbred operations. Patrick has also worked alongside respected bloodstock professionals, including James Bester, across major Australian yearling sales, further strengthening his understanding of commercial bloodstock evaluation.

Alongside Bio-Cal Thoroughbreds, Patrick consults with Arioneo, a French company at the forefront of wearable technology for racehorses, supporting trainers and owners in translating equine performance and health data into practical, on-the-ground decision-making.

Today, Patrick works with a select group of clients across major international bloodstock sales, applying a disciplined process centred on proprietary biomechanical assessment — derived from objective measurement, structural analysis, and algorithmic evaluation — alongside pedigree analysis and traditional physical inspection. The objective is to bring greater clarity, consistency, and confidence to investment decisions in what has traditionally been a highly subjective selection process.

The philosophy is simple: reduce subjectivity where possible and make decisions grounded in evidence.

Bio-Cal Thoroughbreds was founded on the belief that in a market often driven by instinct, there is a distinct advantage in precision, consistency, and measured judgement.
